Patriarchy and Indian Society

                           Patriarchy and Indian Society

                                                          Keshab Chandra Mandal, Ph. D.

Patriarchal chain has fastened women in every Indian society irrespective of caste, region, and religion. Women have been considered as mere source of enjoyment and things of beauty to be adored, to be loved, and to be made friends but not to be given power, chair, and due respect. Patriarchal and feudal social system is not prepared to see women in the helms of power; instead mind set of a section of people is so old and obsolete that they want to confine women within four walls of home and particularly in kitchen, productive and reproductive activities. They are not given any scope and opportunity to flourish, adopt and continue education of their choice and take up desired jobs or even take part in social and political activities. Rather they are controlled and chained in the trap of marriage, procreation, child bearing and rearing, looking after the family members including old, infirm and children and doing household chores. Very few, who are adamant, persistent, or fortunate enough to have good parental and familial assistance, are showing their talents and shining. The Indian soil, nay the world itself, is not favorable for a woman to take some extraordinary work and do something splendid.
