OBNOXIOUS STUDENTS' POLITICS IN UNIVERSITIES
OBNOXIOUS STUDENTS' POLITICS IN UNIVERSITIES
Keshab Chandra Mandal, Ph. D.
Within a few months of chaos and administrative fiasco at Jadavpur University, some students of West Bengal's one of the best universities freed the Vice Chancellor and some of her colleagues after keeping them confined within the chamber for nearly 24 hours.
What is going on in universities? Is it not pinching the academicians? Are the teaching communities not disturbed in all these? How long will these continue? How long the Heads of Higher Academic Institutions be manhandled by the child-like students?
Can the students have the right to seize a woman Vice Chancellor? Do the teachers not enjoy the right to live and liberty?
Recently, nay it has a long history in West Bengal, a group of students have seized the VC and her senior officials causing mental tension, anxiety, rise of blood pressure, and spoiling the good will of the institution. In this case the VC has subdued to the demands of the students and has agreed to talk with them in their place of meeting.
The question is whether the students can do such things? If she would also call the police to 'rescue' her, it would make another Jadavpur. But she kept her patience and sagaciously tackled the situation. Actually, in Europe and America these are rarely experienced. We talk about their openness, sexuality, hobnobbing behavior, ultra-modern dresses, still they do not do so. Are all the bad impact of globalization falling upon Indian and especially Bengal's soil? Prof. Somak Raychaudhuryt, the Presidency dean of sciences who had left the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham to join the Presidency University in 2012 said, "I have taught at Birmingham, Harvard and Cambridge universities. Nowhere are the student allowed to e a part of the decision-making precess on these (relating to admission procedure of students etc.) issues." Similar experience is having to other great academicians of the Presidency, Jadavpur University and others who frequently visit other reputed universities in the world.
I have written earlier also that the teachers and administrators - both civil and political - who are now watching and enjoying the ongoing incidents in universities, colleges and schools, might have to face similar or ever harsher consequences in their life, may be the rage will scratch on the next generation teachers, professors and others.
What is the solution then? My proposal is to introduce MORAL EDUCATION from the schools, may be from primary schools. Do you find any such untoward incidents in Ramkrishna Mission run colleges and universities or religiously run organizations? So, the fault remains in the bottom. Take immediate action in this regard to plug the problem, otherwise the day is not far when the heat of fire will touch your home and your neighbors' too.
The end.
